Tour description
Spending a day visiting some major atractions in Neamt County is a good option for those who prefer less driving and more sightseeing. This tour is also based on diversity including a fortress, a monastery, an ethnographic museum and a urban destination.
First driving stop after leaving Iasi is Neamt Fortress, built at the end of the 14th Century and reinforced by Stephen the Great almost a century after. It’s used to be part of the former Moldavian defence system, take care of the possible threats beyond the Carpathian Mountains.
Just quarter of hour from here, The Monastery of Agapia offers to visitor a masterpiece in terms of paintings made by Nicolae Grigorescu for almost 3 years. Today is one the largest monasteries in Romania and beside the main church you can visit a museum dedicated to the mentioned painter, a carpet workshop and a peaceful nuns village.
After this, we suggest to visit a tiny ethnographic museum made by a single man, Nicolae Popa, during his entire life inside of his house in Tarpesti. It’s also an opportunity to step in a old house, typical for this area.
The next drive will take you to the largest city in the county, Piatra Neamt, where you can take a walk through to Princely Court, discovering the old church and tower built by Stephen the Great, the most popular Moldavian ruler, dated back to the end of the 15th Century. If time permits, the visit should be ended with a ride on the cable car which goes from the rail-station up on the Cozla Mountain offering some breath taking views.
After all this nice visits is time to leave them behind for driving back to Iasi.
