Tour description
Three days, three different and unique tourist regions in Romania. Start in Iasi towards Neamt County, visiting some of its highlights like Neamt Fortress, founded late 14th Century. It used to be an element part of a major defensive system spread along the border of the Moldavian Principality, but today it’s purpose is to give to the visitors a glimpse of how the life in a fortress looked like hundred of years ago. Not far from here is located Neamt Monastery, one of the oldest monastic settlements in Romania known also as “The Jerusalem of the Romanian Orthodoxy”. Drive further towards Poiana Largului Village where you’ll reach the end of the Bicaz Lake, one of the largest reservoirs in Romania.
From here, the road will take you thorough a scenic drive along Bistrita River, flanked by the Carpathian Mountains. Once reached to Chiril Village change the direction up on Rarau Massif, driving on Transrarau Road, another major attraction in the area. Set the base to a hotel located 1500m above the sea level and after a short break, do a hike tour to discover some unique rock formations called “Pietrele Doamnei” (Lady’s Stones).
Next day will take you to Maramures Region located in Northern Romania, famous for its wooden churches, most of them three to four centuries old. To get there you’ll start driving on the same Transrarau road as the previous day, then after a short drive on the main road, another scenic ride awaits you driving over the Prislop Pass finally reaching Sighetu Marmatiei, your destination. At the end of the day we recommend a visit to "The Memorial of the Victimes of Communism and of the Resistance" to learn more about the communist period that Romania faced after World War II for almost forty years. The museum is located in a former prison, one of the toughest where those who were against the communist regime were sent to so called re-education.
Third day, a long one since you need to return to Iasi, will start with visiting some wooden churches, a symbol for Maramures Region. You shoudn’t miss Budesti church, Barsana Monastery, The Holly Paraschiva Church from Poienile Izei or Saint Nicholas Church from Bogdan Voda Village. Not far from here you’ll find an unique museum created by a local lady, where you can have an idea how a household of a traditional family in Maramures looked like, called "The Museum of Romanian Peasant Woman".
After all this visits it's time to start driving back to Iasi, on the same Prislop Pass, then towards Bukovina Region, where you can have a stop to Voronet Monastery, close to Gura Humorului Town, if you don’t reach this area to late.
Another two and half hours you’ll be back in Iasi.
