Tour description
Driving on the top of the mountains and visit to the popular Saxon Towns in Transylvania, that’s what this tour offers. Shortly after departure from Iasi you’ll visit Neamt Fortress, founded in late 14th Century to protect Moldova against potential threats coming beyond the mountains. Today is one of the main attractions close to Iasi city and is a good place to stop before continuing this journey towards Transylvania.
Once left from Targu Neamt, the road will take you through the mountains, along Bicaz Lake and Dam (Izvorul Muntelui) one of the largest water reservoirs in Romania, and finally to a major attraction of the tour, Bicaz Gorges. This place defines what the nature can make only from water and rocks for millions of years. Only ten minutes away, there is another nature wonder, The Red Lake, a place where the nature created a lake by sliding a part of a mountain into a river, around two hundred years ago.
The evening is reserved for a walk, discovering Sighisoara Old Town, one of the few remained citadels where people still live in. This place used to be one of the former seven Saxon towns founded by the German colonists after their arrival in Transylvania in the 12th Century.
Next day is the one when the real adventure starts as Transalpina road will be the main attraction. After departure from Sighisoara, a quick stop to Sibiu is scheduled for discovering another former Saxon citadel, a city which was European Cultural Capital during 2007. Next, head towards Sebes, for Transalpina road, that will take you on the other side of the mountain. For almost 150 kilometres, this road is the highest in Romania, reaching 2145 m above sea level.
After this driving experience, make a stop at Hurezi Monastery, a UNESCO site famous for its architecture, know as “Brancovenesc style”. At the end of the day, stop in Ramnicu Valcea city for overnight.
Third day starts with another road over the mountains, perhaps more popular than Transalpina. The road called Transfagarasan was built during the communist period, with the sacrifice of many people due its difficulty in construction. Before that, don’t forget to make a stop at Curtea de Arges Monastery where you can visit the burying place of the Romanian Royal Family, starting from King Carol I, until King Michael I.
Drive along the Vidraru Dam and Lake, before reaching the top of the Fagaras Mountains. There you will find the glacier lake named Balea and the second part of the Transfagarasan road, which reveals an impresive glacier valley, the most scenic part of the road as well. From here, continue towards Brasov, with a quick stop on the way to visit the Fagaras Fortress. Brasov is another former Saxon town, which today offers many options for sightseeing and it’s a good choice for spending the evening discovering its old part.
The last day is reserved for visiting two of the most popular sights in Romania. You’ll start with Bran Castle, known for it’s connection with Dracula story, followed by another magic place, Peles Castle at Sinaia, founded in the second half of the 19th Century by the Romanian Royal Family as their summer residence.
After all this visits, it’s time to travel back to Iasi, for the next six hours.
